Recreating the Melting Glam Skin Skull

IMG-0075.jpg

Its Halloween Szn, lets do this!

“For my first look that I created in the year 2021, I went with a recreation of makeup that a YouTuber did many years ago, I always felt like I could never do something that looked so good, but after giving it a try, this is the result of trial and error! If I can do it, so can you!”

If you’re reading this Blog, that means you’re ready to recreate this look! All your need-to-know’s, and how-to’s are right here, so look no further because that’s exactly what this post is here to help you do. I gotchuu!

Although this look took me upwards of 5 hours to complete, not because it was difficult to do, it just required a lot of steps for me. Admittedly, this is the first time that I created a makeup look like this and there may have been some trial and error along the way. I had always wanted to do it, well, always wanted to ever since I saw Desi Perkins’ video, but I never had the courage….until now! So, if you’re a little worried or think that this is “out of your wheelhouse”, you are so very wrong. Stick with me kid! I’m gonna help you recreate this makeup look, so no need to feel like this is out of your league.

I have found that the key to recreating looks such as these, is that, while it does require some precision, using to much precision, especially for a Halloween look, isn’t necessary. Worst case scenario, you just created a “grudge-ier” version of my recreation, and that is not so bad!

Alright, enough of me bumbling on, lets get into how to recreate this look!

Step One: You’re going to need some kind of “nude” pencil, white is cool too, that may even be better, I just didn’t decide to use a white pencil when I was creating this look (what a doofus!). Instead of using a white pencil, I used the Master Mattes Brightening Pencil by Makeup By Mario.

Create your Outline

The reason you need a nude/white pencil, is because the first thing you want to do, well, the first thing I did, was created a rough outline on my face of where I wanted the glam makeup to start and where I wanted to skull makeup to begin. Once you create that outline, it should look something like this.

Step Two: The thing that you will absolutely need in order complete this look and bring it to life, is the Mehron Makeup 3D Gel. This is what you will use in order to create the dripping skin effect.

You can purchase this 3D Gel in one of two places that I am familiar with: (1) Mehron Makeup website and (2) Amazon. The price of this product depends on the size you choose to purchase and where you get it from. I got mine a while back from the Mehron website, for approx $10 before shipping; however, this would be the prefect opportunity to flex that Amazon Prime membership, and buy this product on Amazon for around the same price shipping included. I decided to go with the 2 oz bottle, but they do offer a size down as well as a size up.

Black Girl Pro Tip: Because I am a woman of color, and Mehron Makeup doesn’t include my skintone shade, I had to mix my foundation with this product since I purchased the 3D Gel in ‘Fleshtone’.

Glam Makeup

I decided to start with the glam portion of this makeup.

  • The first thing I decided to work on for the glam side was my my brows. I used Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow in Ebony and to create darker hairs towards the front of my brow, I used the black shade from the Makeupforever Flash Color Case Palette . To finish my brows I used the ABH Clear Brow Gel

  • Next, I worked on my eyes. For my base, I used the P. Louis Base in 5 to keep the eye shadow I was working with to be vibrant, to contrast the black and white of the skull.

  • For my eyeshadow I used the palette Jaclyn Hill v.2 palette. The shades that I decided to work with was, ‘My Man’, ‘Tipsy Girl’, ‘Not my Journey’, ‘No Joke’, and ‘Taliya’.

  • For my winged liner as well as my waterline liner, I used the NYX Jumbo Pencil in Blueberry Pop. To set my winged liner, I used the shade shimmer blue shade in the James Charles Artistry Palette (I’m not sure what the name is, sorry!)

  • Once my eyeshadow was laid down, I applied my foundation, only to the portion of my face where glam makeup was present, I also used an undereye concealer, and I set my foundation and concealer with powders. (this step is the same as your makeup routine, apply the products that work best for you here.)

(Now that I looked back, I’m thinking that instead of using a small detailed flat brush to get in the tough areas for my foundation, you may have better luck applying foundation to the area you want to be glam, and then outlining which portion is glam vs. which portion is going to be the skull makeup.

  • After the lid is complete, I moved over to the bottom lash line, using the same colors I used on top! easy-peasy! For the bottom lid, I want to mention, that I started with my favorite liner pencils from Urban Decay, the 24/7 Eye liner in ‘Perversion’, from here, I applied the darkest shade I used on my top lid to the bottom lid. I like to apply the shadow on the just under the liner, and blend up to give a nice smudging effect of the black liner and the dark shade I’m using (in this case ‘Not My Journey’, from there just continue to build the remaining colors until you get get a sunset gradient on the bottom lash line!

  • For lashes, I got them from my bestfriend Shaina, the reason she is not tagged or linked is because she is not selling lashes anymore. Sorry yall! BUT for my bottom lashes I did use lashes from the Sephora Luxe Silk False Lashes in ‘Dutchess’.

*This trick that I learned with bottom lashes such as these is to cut them up, and turn the lashes upside down before applying them! makes all the difference. Maybe not a trick but, it truly does make all the difference.

  • The gold flakes that I used, I bought from the craft store, you can also simply google ‘Gold Flakes’ and many products will come up to purchase!

Once the Glam side is handled, its time to get into the…

SKULL MAKEUP

So although this side is mostly using black and white, don’t forget that dimension will need to be added to the skull in order for it to look more realistic. To make this skull look realistic, you will also need to using various brown shades to replicate that life like dimension

  • Because I am working with blacks and white, I decided to use black and white primers, bases, and powders.

  • Since I decided to start with my eye first, I first drew an outline of a skull shaped circle around my eye. Although my next urge was to continue using my Makeupforever Flash Color Case Palette (this is an expensive palette even though it is on sale right now. I do believe that this palette is a great investment, but its also important to note that there are dupes out there for a fraction of the price, that perform pretty well when it comes to Halloween makeup). Once I created my outline, I used the SUVA Beauty Prime + Paint in Black as my base for the eyeshadow.

Psst! If you are using the Prime and Paint from SUVABeauty, make sure you follow the directions and fully blend out this product before placing product on top. This will provide the most color payoff!

  • Once I applied the Prime + Paint, I used the black shade from the James Charles Artistry Palette from Morphe Brushes (Spoiler alert, I use a lot of the black and white shade from this palette to set my makeup)

  • Next up, I used the Makeupforever Flash Color Case palette and outlined the black makeup around my eye first, once I did that, I began to paint my face with white paint in broad strokes until I got to the parts of the makeup where I needed to be a little more meticulous in my application.

  • For the more meticulous areas, I used the NYX Jumbo pencil in Milk to get in those hard to reach areas.

  • Once the white makeup was applied, I set that makeup with the pure white shade from the Artistry palette.

Now its time to get into, what I thought was the HARDEST part of this makeup, that actually turned out to be not so bad, the mouth!

  • One thing I decided to do first was to sketch out the ‘teeth’ first with a black eyeshadow. I’m not sure I can give a step-by-step on how to do this, something I did do was reference pictures, in order to get the general shape down. One pro-tip is that this is meant to be fun, and any mistakes you make is okay! go with it, this is why we are sketching out the teeth first!

  • Once the teeth are sketched out, I went in with the Color Flash Case, in Black, and deepened up that sketch that was laid down. Don’t forget to add that black in between the drips that we sketched out on the side of the face.

  • Once the teeth were finished, I added DIMENSION to the skull overall. So I used deeper browns under the eye and at the top of the head and I added white paint inside the blacks of the nose, the blacks in between the paint drips, and also whitened and brightened the teeth!

Now it’s time to get your drip on! The Mehron Makeup 3D Gel, is very easy to use, make sure that you place the product in a very hot bath. I poured that water in a bowl, and placed the product in the hot water and waited for about 15-20 minutes for the product to melt down.

*Keep in mind that the water needs to be very very hot, I chose to boil the water on the stove in a pot first, them transferred the water into a bowl.

  • Once the product was fully melted, I pumped some foundation in the bottle and gently mixed the product so that the drips would be the same color as my skin tone.

  • I will caution you, when applying this product you will need to tilt your head back to get the true dripping effect. if you dont tilt your head back the drip will fall the the ground. ( I know because this happened to me several times…womp womp!)

  • Fake blood was the absolute very last thing that I used. You can purchase this at any store really. I went to walmart, and bought fake blood, as well as making fake blood with corn syrup and food coloring.

Okay yall! That is the competed look! If you do choose to recreate this look, make sure that you use the #eosphynix so I can repost your look!

Thank you for stopping by!! Stay tuned for my next post!
